Light & atmosphere
Planning stone that glows.
What to consider before choosing a backlit island, bar, or feature wall.

Backlit stone is a collaboration between the material and the light behind it. The aim is an even, considered effect that reveals character without exposing individual light sources.
Start with a sample
Translucency varies within and between slabs. Review a representative sample with the proposed lighting before committing to the design. Thickness, backing, supports, and natural inclusions affect the result.
Plan for the practical details
Make room for diffusion, heat management, wiring, controls, and maintenance access. Dimming and color temperature should be reviewed in the context of the room.
Treat a preview as inspiration
An on-screen lighting preview is illustrative. It cannot predict exactly how a particular slab will perform in your home.
Consider the surrounding light
The feature should be reviewed alongside cabinet lighting, nearby pendants, and architectural accent lighting. Save an onyx or quartzite example and include a photograph of the whole room when discussing your backlit-stone project.
These notes are a starting point. Final product suitability and project requirements are reviewed for your specific space.
